Marcus Bell, founder & lead tech
Still runs the tricky calls: heat pumps that won't defrost, houses that won't dry out, duct systems nobody else wants to crawl under.

Fernway started with a simple frustration: too many Triangle homeowners were sold new systems they didn't need, or the wrong size for their house. We built a company around testing first, explaining what we found and letting you decide.

Marcus Bell grew up in Garner, in a 1970s ranch with a back bedroom that never cooled down all summer. He started out in HVAC on new-construction crews, setting systems in subdivisions all over Wake County, and then moved to service. That's when he saw how many of those builder systems were oversized, under-ducted and sweating in their crawl spaces.
He started Fernway to do the opposite: measure the house, size the equipment for it, fix the ducts, and tell people the truth about repairs. The name came from the ferns that grow wild in the shady crawl spaces he's spent a lot of time in.
Today Fernway is a small team of service techs, installers and a dispatcher, working out of West Raleigh.

Every visit includes real measurements. You'll see the numbers and what they mean.
Load calculations, duct checks and humidity readings drive our recommendations, not the old unit's label or what's in the warehouse.
We don't pay commission on equipment sales. If a repair buys you good years, that's what we'll suggest.
Shoe covers, floor runners, drop cloths, and careful work around plaster, trim and finished ceilings.
If something we fixed isn't right, call us and we'll come back and make it right.

Diagnostics and repairs. Carries a hygrometer everywhere and will tell you your indoor humidity before you ask.

Runs replacement days. Known for leaving the attic and crawl space cleaner than he found them.

Duct repair, sealing and dehumidifier installs. Has opinions about flex duct.

Answers the phone, books the visits and gives you an arrival window she means.
On a real site, the North Carolina license number appears on every proposal and invoice, and you can verify it with the state licensing board.

Each summer we set aside a few no-cost AC checks for older neighbors living alone, arranged through local senior centers and churches. We also host a spring workshop at a local library on filters, thermostats and what to do when the AC quits.
“Marcus crawled under our house, came back with photos of three disconnected ducts, and fixed them. We didn't need the new system another company quoted.”
“Hannah explained our humidity numbers and fixed the fan setting and a duct leak. The house finally feels dry.”

No. Fernway is a locally owned Raleigh company, not part of a national chain or a private-equity group. The people answering the phone and working on your system live in the Triangle and deal with the same pollen, humidity and ice storms you do. Decisions about pricing and recommendations are made here.
No. Our techs aren't paid commission on equipment sales, so nobody has a reason to push a replacement you don't need. They're paid to diagnose accurately, fix things properly and explain your options clearly. That's also why you'll sometimes hear "keep running it" from us.
